Sclerotherapy and Laser treatments –Treatment for Varicose Veins and Spider Veins

Spider veins, reticular veins and varicose veins form when the valves in our veins become leaky. These unsightly veins are a common problem in both men and women. This can occur as a result of prolonged standing, from aging, or it can be genetic. In women, it can result from high estrogen states (pregnancy or from oral contraceptives use). When the valves in our veins become leaky, blood pools in our lower legs instead of flowing up toward the heart. The buildup of pressure eventually causes enlargement of the veins, making them visible on the skin.

The safest and most effective treatment for spider veins, reticular veins and varicose veins is sclerotherapy.

Sclerotherapy is a series of injections (sotradecol or saline) into these enlarged veins, causing inflammation and collapse of the vessels. This can lead to dramatic improvement in the appearance of your legs. Some veins are not amenable to sclerotherapy, and can treated with laser. A series of 3 to 6 sclerotherapy and laser treatments for spider veins or varicose veins are typical for optimal results. Regular activity can be resumed immediately after treatment, but it is suggested patients wear compression stockings for at least 7 days post-therapy.

You can see the difference these treatments make in our photo gallery of photos taken before and after sclerotherapy. For best results, seek consultation by a qualified physician such as a board certified dermatologist.
