Common Questions About Juvederm

Juvederm is becoming one of the most popular anti-aging treatments.  This smooth consistency gel can correct facial wrinkles and folds such as nasolabial folds, which are the lines from the nose to the corners of the mouth.  It is non-surgical filler that is injected into the skin for temporary smoothing in contracts to Botox, which is aimed at temporarily reducing the muscle activity beneath the skin surface in areas like crow’s feet and forehead frown lines.  Just because it is a filler, however, doesn’t mean that it is like other dermal fillers also being used currently.  One of the main benefits of Juvederm is that it is comprised mostly of hyaluronic acid, a natural substance found throughout the body.  In addition to hydrating the skin, it plumps up the volume of the skin and its foundations.

In contrast to other products based on hyaluronic acid, many of which are granular, Juvederm is a smooth gel.  The nature of the filler allows for natural and smooth looking skin following injection, and it also contains no form of animal tissue.  While other hyaluronic acid based fillers have not been ideal for people who have dark skin, Juvederm is safe for people of all complexions.  As Juvederm does not require testing prior to injection, and results are instantaneous, it is a convenient and effective dermal filler.  Most people can return to work and resume daily activities the same day or the next day.

Here are some basic answers to keep in mind as you explore your options to getting that great skin you want and that fresher face you’re about to experience:

How long does it last?

Results vary by person based on how the body metabolizes the injections, but Juvederm typically lasts for a period of 9 months to one year.  While it works differently than Botox, which targets muscle activity that leads to wrinkles, both have about the same longevity.  Although it is similar to collagen injections, as both are based on hyaluronic acid, Juvederm does last longer than collagen as it is more resistant to being broken down in the body.

How long is the treatment?

The Juvederm procedure is very fast, and the actual injections generally take around 30 minutes.  You will need to allow for additional time before the injections are administered to discuss your medical history, but you will not be required to do an allergy test.  Your physician also will examine your wrinkles and folds to determine their depth so that the treatment meets your individual needs.  Anesthesia is not required, but many physicians will apply a topical or injectable form to numb the area beforehand.

How long until I can go into the sun?

Tanning is never recommended, but you should be able to tolerate normal sun exposure after the first day of treatment with Juvederm.  It is important to wear sunscreen.

How long until I can wear makeup?

Normal makeup routines are fine, but you should avoid massaging or unnecessarily touching the treated area for a few days.  Also refrain from applying any products that contain alcohol to your face.

How long will the area be swollen?

Most patients are able to resume daily activities or return to work the day of treatment or the next as they will have minimal swelling.  In order to prevent a greater degree of swelling and bruising, it is advisable to avoid aspiring or ibuprofen containing products for a few days.  It also is a good idea to avoid exercise other than walking for 24 hours following the treatment.
